The history of Sirio Elettronica has taken place, in these five decades, in parallel with epochal revolutions in the world of electronics, information technology and industrial commerce. With the introduction of active components such as Power Transistors, Mosfet, IGBT, power conversion has gradually moved from the industrial frequencies of 50 Hz up to the current frequencies of hundreds of kHz: a technological revolution on active components which, consequently, has revolutionized the family of passive components, in particular transformers and inductors.
At the same time, following the changes that have occurred in the IT sector, we have moved from operating machines equipped with only control buttons to increasingly computerized and automated machines. In the background, an industrial market that has radically changed its face: competition, from a local, national and European level, based on common rules, has now become global competition, without the same rules for everyone.

Sirio Elettronica responded to these epochal revolutions by trying to grasp the positive aspects and opportunities and making them its own. Thus was born the Technical Office, which is today one of the cornerstones of the company: a research and development team, made up of engineers and specialized personnel. R&D presents its technological proposals in the transformer sector, translating them into standard catalogues, on the other hand it listens to customers and collaborates to satisfy the needs of the different applications.

From idea to realization in collaboration with the customer

Project

Since its establishment, the Sirio company has always stood out for its research and development activity.

By research we mean: the study of new materials available on the market (magnetic materials, insulators, conductors, etc.); in-depth analysis of new technologies for the production of components (in particular for the automation of production procedures); the analysis of emerging needs from customers; continuous updating on the evolution of high frequency power conversion; preparation on the regulations that regulate the sector. It is in this context that, for example, standard components are created.

Development includes the set of activities through which the requests coming from the customers’ Technical Offices are concretized into real components. The creation of a new transformer requires close interaction between the converter designer, who requires a dedicated transformer, and Sirio engineers. The design starts from the customer’s specifications and passes through the different development phases of the component. After a preliminary commercial evaluation, Sirio R&D carries out a series of calculations, originating some possible solutions from which the one that incorporates all the project requirements is chosen, combining at the same time with the production technologies available.

The choice of the definitive solution and its optimization is obtained by means of dedicated software for carrying out calculations, developed over the years by the R&D team, and for the simulation of electromagnetic fields, an indispensable tool in the development of power components.

Each design is accompanied by the prototyping phase: it is at this point that, after having agreed on the solution with the customer, the project on paper becomes a concrete component that makes best use of automatic production technologies and leverages the standardization of materials. Subsequently, the customer receives some samples for application testing and subsequent approval.

A laboratory for the research of new solutions

Power Lab

The design of special high frequency components, especially if high working voltages and critical environmental conditions are required, must always be accompanied by an analysis of their characteristics, to verify the correspondence of the initial theoretical evaluation with reality.

For this reason, right from the start, Sirio created a laboratory for the Technical Office, year after year enriched and updated with new instrumentation, for the design of Sirio components: those in the catalog and those created in collaboration with customers.

At a certain point this first laboratory, although so important for development activities, no longer seemed sufficient. A second laboratory was born in 2023, in a different and dedicated location.

Objective: to look for other construction types for transformers used in high frequency converters. The new laboratory therefore does not replace the first laboratory but diversifies: it is intended solely for research. Research into new materials, new construction solutions, new performances. Here we study different ways to maintain or improve the current technical characteristics of the components, at the same time reducing their final cost.

The laboratory is currently able to test prototypes inserted in converters operating at high frequency up to 250 kHz and up to 15 kW of power; the intention is to extend the power of the converters up to 50 kW.
